Back when Rachel Alexandra’s owner/breeder, the late Dolph Morrison was looking for a stud for his mare, Lotta Kim (Rachel’s mother), he liked the look of Medaglio D’Oro, who at the time was a no-name stallion.
Trainer Hal Wiggins used to tease Dolph that he mostly looked for cheap pairings, though Dolph always said he really studied the books for the best pairings. Whatever the case, his faith in Medaglio D’Oro certainly bore fruit, as this article documents.
