One of my pet peeves is that we spend ONLY the month of February as a society talked about the accomplishments of African Americans. On the other hand, i just found a story about African American jockeys and how they disappeared from the sport that I just have to share. It’s from last May, just before the Kentucky Derby, but the information remains the same. To the right is famous jockey Oliver Lewis, who won the first ever Kentucky Derby in 1875, riding Aristedes.
This article is written by historian Katherine Mooney, who teaches at Florida State University and is author of the book, Race Horse Men.
